Is it Logical to Live in a Shipping Container?
Most think of shipping containers as simple metal boxes used to transport goods across the ocean. Not me! I think of shipping containers as the coolest home building material out there. Termite proof, hurricane proof, mold proof, recycled material, and stylish modern design, hopefully shipping container homes are here to stay! Do you think it’s logical to live in a container home?
Meet Logical Homes, a Southern California container home builder. Architect Peter DeMaria is a true visionary and container home pioneer. His mission is to “make progressive residential architecture more accessible.” This goal is achieved by using unconventional materials including recycled and industrial materials as well as an efficient prefabrication and assembly process.
This is my dream Logical Home. With 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, office, large and open living areas, floor to ceiling windows, 1,960 square feet and a 2 car garage, it’s vision of efficient, modern, and green perfection.
It takes approximately 5 months to complete a container home once permits are in place. They cost about $125-$165 per square foot, less than most new construction. They are made of used shipping retired from transporting goods usually between the US and China. These steal structures set a great stage for “green home building.” In the case of Logical Homes, they are LEED certifiable which is an internationaly recognized green building certification.
I’ve talked to some who can only imagine container homes as a “hot oven” of a home with an interior that feels more like a manufactured home than a modern masterpiece. In fact there are advanced insulating techniques that make container home temperature just as pleasent as any other home. In addition, those that are correcly built are expected to last at least 200 years! For those who are still not sold on the idea, check out the completed container home by designer, Debbie Glassberg:
As a Roseville CA real estate agent, I’ve sold over 650 “stick homes”, but nothing like this. It would be amazing to sell neighborhoods of container homes….one day!
What do you think of this home building technique? Could you see yourself living in a container home?
